Common Causes of Foot Pain
Your feet are complex structures with numerous bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons that can be susceptible to a variety of problems. Some of the most common causes of foot pain include:
- Plantar Fasciitis: Inflammation of the thick band of tissue (plantar fascia) that runs across the bottom of your foot, connecting your heel bone to your toes. This often causes stabbing pain, especially with your first steps in the morning.
- Arthritis: Both osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear) and inflammatory arthritis (like gout) can affect the joints in your feet and ankles, leading to pain, stiffness, and swelling.
- Bunions: A bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of your big toe, which can cause the big toe to point toward the other toes.
- Achilles Tendonitis: Overuse or repeated stress on the Achilles tendon, which connects your calf muscles to your heel bone, can cause pain and inflammation.
- Neuromas (Morton’s Neuroma): A thickening of the tissue around a nerve leading to your toes, often causing a sharp, burning pain in the ball of your foot.
- Sprains and Strains: Injuries to the ligaments (sprains) or muscles and tendons (strains) in the foot.
- Flat Feet (Fallen Arches): When the arches of the feet are not properly supported, it can lead to pain in the arches and heels.
Symptoms of Foot Problems
Foot pain can present in many ways, depending on the underlying cause. You might experience:
- A dull ache or a sharp, stabbing pain.
- Burning, numbness, or tingling sensations.
- Pain that worsens with activity or after long periods of standing.
- Stiffness in the joints of the foot or ankle.
- Swelling or redness in the affected area.
Our Approach to Treating Foot Pain
At CAREcenters of South Jersey – Integrative Wellness and Regenerative Care, we believe in a holistic approach to foot pain that addresses the source of the problem, not just the symptoms. Our non-invasive treatment plans may include:
- Chiropractic Adjustments: Gentle adjustments to the bones and joints in the feet, ankles, and even the spine can help to restore proper alignment, improve joint function, and relieve pressure on nerves.
- Soft Tissue Therapy: Techniques like massage and myofascial release are used to reduce muscle tension, break down scar tissue, and improve circulation in the feet and lower legs.
- Physical Therapy: We will design a customized program of stretching and strengthening exercises to improve the flexibility and stability of your feet and ankles, helping to prevent future problems.
- Custom Orthotics: In some cases, we may recommend custom-fitted shoe inserts to provide proper support for your arches and correct biomechanical issues.
